The Huntridge Teen Clinic
Description of Organization
Mission
Statement
The
mission of The Huntridge Teen Clinic is to provide medical and dental care to
uninsured and at-risk adolescents who are ineligible or unable to obtain
services available through Clark County agencies.
History
The
Clinic was established in October 1994 to provide medical care to at-risk
teens. The dental clinic was added in
1998. The Huntridge Teen Clinic is a
501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, federal tax identification number 88-0329221.
In
the fiscal year ended June 30, 2005, the medical clinic saw 2,889 teens, an
increase of 41% over the prior fiscal year, and the dental clinic saw 826
teens. These are kids from families with
meager financial resources, no insurance and few options. The Huntridge Teen Clinic represents, in most
cases, their only hope for the basic medical and dental care most people take
for granted.
Current
Programs
The
Clinic offers two programs for at-risk teens, a medical program and a dental program. Criteria for acceptance in either program is
that the patient must be between the ages of twelve and eighteen, except the
Clinic will continue seeing an existing patient through age nineteen.
The
medical clinic charges $15 for a sports physical, and a donation of $5 is
requested for lab tests. The most commom
lab tests include pap tests, pregnancy tests and tests for HIV/AIDS and other
sexually transmitted diseases. There are
no other charges for services.
The
medical clinic employs a full-time Nurse Practitioner who works under the
auspices of a collaborating physician and lab physician. The Nurse Practitioner is licensed to write
prescriptions. Prior to working with
patients, Nurse Practitioners hired by The Huntridge Teen Clinic undergo extensive
training in family planning issues at the Clark County Health District. The Huntridge Teen Clinic is a Federal Title
X Famly Planning delegate agency.
The
dental clinic requests a donation of $10 for each dental visit. There are no other charges for dental
services.
A
Dental Hygienist is employed by The Huntridge Teen Clinic. The Hygienist has been authorized by the
Nevada Board of Dental Examiners to provide sealants as well as initial
triage.
For
those procedures that require a licensed dentist, the Clinic relies on a pool
of approximately 35 volunteer dentists.
These individuals unselfishly donate their time and skills to serve
disadvantaged teens at the Clinic, and occasionally at their business location. The Clinic employs Dental Assistants to
assist volunteer dentists chairside when they work at the Clinic.
In
July 2005, the Nevada Board of Dental Examiners approved The Huntridge Teen
Clinic as a continuing education provider for up to six hours of continuing
education credit for volunteer dentists.
