The Value of the Advanced Placement Program
The Advanced Placement program provides motivated high school students with the opportunity to take college-level courses in the supportive environment of a high school setting. This program is specifically designed for students who are willing to accept the challenge of a rigorous academic curriculum. Students not only gain college-level skills, but may also earn credit, advanced placement, or both for college. The AP Exam sends a powerful message to colleges and universities that the student is ready for a college level curriculum. See your counselor for detailed course offerings and information or visit apcentral.collegeboard.com.

Athletes and the NCAA Clearinghouse

Students who plan to attend an NCAA Division I or II institution and who wish to participate in intercollegiate athletics need to follow initial eligibility procedures established by the NCAA Clearinghouse. Students must make their school counselor and their coach aware of their interest in collegiate athletics, as high school courses must be NCAA-approved. Current high school juniors should plan to take the ACT or SAT by the end of their eleventh grade year. When registering for the ACT/SAT, use code 9999 to report test scores to the NCAA Clearinghouse. At the start of the senior year, students should register with the Clearinghouse online at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net. At the time of registration, students should request that their high school transcript be sent to the Clearinghouse. Following graduation, high school seniors must also request that their final high school transcript be sent to the Clearinghouse. For more information, call the NCAA hotline at 1-877-262-1492 or visit the website.

Hot College Majors
A recent article by Kaplan and Newseek indicated that majors such as art history and film are making a comeback. In addition, majors such as international diplomacy and health sciences (including nursing) are significantly on the rise. The authors suggest that employment opportunities are impacting students’ decisions on college majors. According to information from ACT, students in Nevada indicated interest in the following college majors: business and management, communications, architecture, criminal justice, accounting, marketing, journalism, and social services. Students or parents interested in more information on careers, majors, and college searches may visit the Nevada Career Information System at: http://www.nvcis.intocareers.org . The user name is: ncis and the password is: nevada.

UNLV / UNR
High school students planning on entering UNLV or UNR please note that a minimum GPA of 3.00 in core classes is now required for admission.

Seniors are reminded that the deadline for admission to UNLV is February 1, 2008. Although the admissions deadline for UNR is “rolling” through August 2008, students are strongly encouraged to apply early to meet financial aid and scholarship deadlines. The financial aid and scholarship deadline for both UNLV and UNR is February 1, 2008. Students are also reminded that the ACT or SAT is also required for admissions and for placement in English and math courses. As UNLV and UNR do not require a writing test, students may consider taking the ACT. The writing portion of the ACT is optional, whereas the writing portion of the SAT is required. The cost of the ACT without the writing test is $30.00, while the cost of the SAT is $43.00. Students may register for the ACT at www.actstudent.org or the SAT at www.collegeboard.com.

Free Application for Federal Student (FAFSA)
Students can access the FAFSA application at: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
Also, step-by-step instructions on how to complete the application are available at http://financialaid.nevada.edu/Applications/fafsa.asp
Although the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) may not be submitted until after January 1, 2008, parents and students may register for a P.I.N. at any time.  Custodial parents and students may log on to www.pin.ed.gov to establish a P.I.N. by entering their name, SSN, date of birth, and address. The P.I.N. acts as an electronic signature for FAFSA on the Web, which drastically reduces processing time.  As with any P.I.N., the student and parent should keep the FAFSA P.I.N. information in a safe place and should not share the info with anyone.  The P.I.N. remains valid indefinitely, and can be used to make corrections to the FAFSA, and to re-apply from year to year.  In order to complete the FAFSA on the Web, parents and students may log on to www.fafsa.ed.gov in order to submit information after January 1, 2008.

UNLV Scholarships.
The UNLV scholarship application is found at: http://financialaid.unlv.edu/
UNLV offers merit and need-based scholarships through the online application.

The priority deadline for both the FAFSA and the UNLV Scholarship application is February 1, but students are still able to submit the application(s) after this date. Of course, the earlier the better!
