Reading

SUCCEED.

READ!

Effective reading requires the reader to use print as a basis for gathering information to make sense of his or her world. The reader needs to apply a number of strategies for understanding, including inference, generalization, and interpretation. The term strategies refers to conscious and flexible plans that readers apply and adapt to particular tasks and texts. (American College Testing, 1996)

MULTIPASS is a before-reading strategy designed to assist students in determining what the reading selection is about, connecting what (s)he already knows about the topic, and setting a purpose for reading.

SQ3R is a complete reading process strategy incorporating activities before, during and after reading a selection.

The K-W-L strategy also engages the students in before, during and after reading activities. It is a reading-thinking strategy consisting of three major components: Recalling what is KNOWN, determining what the student WANTS to know, and identifying what is LEARNED.
