SHOOT                  CD Cover

Make covers for mix CDs
If you're thinking of giving someone a homemade mix CD this holiday season, you can make the present even more personal if you use Adobe® Photoshop® Elements 2.0 to create a custom CD cover to go with it. It's a snap to create a great looking insert for your CD case — called a jewel case — that will showcase all your hard work.

Get ready

A great place to start is with some of your own snapshots, maybe of the person you're giving the mix to, and then combine and transform those using Photoshop Elements. So, gather up some photos, launch Photoshop Elements, and let's get started.

Creating your jewel case

Start creating your custom CD cover by setting up your document size. CD jewel cases measure 4.75 inches by 4.75 inches, so begin by selecting New from the File menu. We're going to use a standard piece of letter-sized paper for this CD cover, but set up your work area to be the exact size of the CD case. In the dialog box, enter 4.75 inches for the width and 4.75 inches for the height.

"New" dialog box

Then, click once on the Magnifying Glass tool and choose the Print Size button on the top toolbar. This will display your jewel case design at the same size it's going to be printed.

Making your borders

Since your jewel case cover will be smaller than a sheet of normal printer paper, you'll need to make outlines to help you cut the finished artwork to the right size. To do this, make a thin outline to use as a guide. If you're using a Mac, press Command-A or if you're using a PC press Ctrl-A to select the whole document. Then from the Edit menu chose Stroke, and enter "1" in the Width box. Next, under Location click the box next to Inside. This will create a thin line around the whole document to help you cut out the CD cover.

Stroke screen capture

Bringing in your pictures

Tool barIf you want some pictures on your CD cover, open up a photo by selecting Open from the File menu. Next, select the Move tool from the toolbar, which is the top right tool on the toolbar.

Click and hold on your picture with the Move tool and drag it onto your CD cover.

You can resize or rotate the image by selecting Free Transform from the Transform option under the Image menu, or you can turn it by selecting one of the choices under Rotate from the Image menu. If you want more than one photo on your cover, just open up more photographs and move them over the same way you did with your first picture.

Bringing in your pictures

Spicing up your CD cover

Final productYou can add text to your CD cover by clicking on the Text tool, which is the fourth tool down on the right column of the toolbar. Or, you can use any of Photoshop Element's other tools to add graphics, or use some of the filters to really change the way your pictures look. Take a look at some of your favorite bands’ CD covers for some inspiration. This step is entirely up to you, so let your imagination run wild.

Printing out your CD cover

Now all that's left is to print out your CD cover by selecting Print from the File menu. Next, cut inside the thin black line around your jewel case, and slide it inside your CD case. Now you've got yourself a custom cover to go with your custom CD.
